Packaging

Consumers prefer sustainable packaging – which is why aluminum is the perfect choice. As one of only four dedicated can sheet mills in North America, Kaiser Aluminum is well positioned to help meet the growing demand for recyclable packaging. Through our work with industry associations and other stakeholders, we are helping increase the recycling of used beverage cans and bottles across the U.S.

According to the Aluminum Association, current and planned initiatives should lead to an approximately 70% recycle rate nationwide by 2030. Food and beverage products made with recycled materials produce about 80% fewer emissions than cans and bottles created with primary aluminum. By increasing recycling rates, we can promote circularity and reduce waste, putting recycled post-consumer aluminum beverage cans back into the market in about 60 days.

According to the Aluminum Association, creating a 12-oz aluminum can results in 45% lower associated emissions compared to making a 12-oz glass bottle, and 49% less than a 20-oz plastic bottle. Also, the aluminum can’s space efficiency and light weight-to-strength ratio results in 35% lower shipping emissions than glass bottles on a per ounce basis.
